Along with Dedicated Servers, we also provide the following services to compliment and enhance the service.
Reverse DNS (rDNS)
Most commonly rDNS is used for mail servers; when an mail server sends out an email for a domain, the
receiving server commonly does a “reverse lookup” on the MX record to determine if the IP address
sending the email is actually the server it’s supposed to be. Email systems such as AOL and 1&1 now use
this as a basic check before accepting email.
For example:
If domain
bloggs.com has a MX record of
mail.bloggs.com, with an IP address of
1.2.3.4, and that server sends an email to the mail server of
fred.com, fred’s email server
will check the MX record of
bloggs.com (
mail.bloggs.com) to ensure it’s IP address actually
is
1.2.3.4, if it’s not it may block the message from being accepted.
Additionally some security software and enterprise management systems use rDNS to ensure the IP address
of the server connecting is actually the server as specified in it’s hosts file.
We offer Reverse DNS free of charge. Any customer who has a VMware hosted Dedicated Server (or physical
servers with
www.sheffielddatacentre.com)
can have their IP address registered against a hostname.

Managed Firewalls
Network security is paramount to the stability and sustainability of any online service. We host
and maintain Managed Firewalls on our VMware cluster, based on hardened pfSense appliances.
Our Managed Firewalls allow you to focus on the day-to-day operations of your business without having
to devote time or resources to network security, and feature:
- Filtering by source / destination IP, protocol, source / destination port.
- Extensive logging.
- Grouping of IP’s networks and ports into aliases.
- Stateful Layer 2 firewall.
- Port forwarding.
- 1:1 NAT.
- Outbound NAT.
- NAT reflection.
- IPSEC VPN tunnels.
- FTP “pasv mode” proxy.
- DHCP server and relay.
- Captive portal.
Updating firewall rules, NAT redirections or requesting changes is easy; simply submit a support ticket
detailing what you need changing and we’ll do the rest. Firewall rule changes are only done Mon-Fri 9am
– 6pm.
Managed Firewalls cost £100 a year.

Backups
Files on servers can easily get corrupted, deleted or lost – having safe and reliable data backups is
essential. The recoverably of your data can ensure the survival of your business if disaster strikes.
We run the Amanda backup suite of software, with agents for Windows, Linux, and Solaris servers.
Backups are saved to our Storage Area Network, ensuring a quick and error-free backup, and speedy
restores when recovery is needed.
